Richard L. Lindstrom, M.D., is the Founder and Managing Partner of Minnesota Eye Consultants where he performs LASIK, Custom LASIK, specialized LASIK Eye Surgery and other types of Laser Eye Surgery. Dr. Lindstrom is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, LASIK surgeon and internationally recognized leader in Corneal, Refractive and Laser Eye Surgery including LASIK, Custom LASIK Eye Surgery specialized LASIK Eye Surgery and Lens Replacement Surgery. He has been at the forefront of Ophthalmology's evolutionary changes throughout his career, as a recognized researcher, teacher, inventor, writer, lecturer and highly acclaimed physician and surgeon. A graduate of Wayzata High School in Wyzata, Minnesota Dr. Lindstrom graduated Magna Cum Laude from the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, and continued on to complete his Medical Degree at the University of Minnesota in 1972. Over the next several years, Dr. Lindstrom pursued extensive research and investigational studies and Residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota. In addition he completed Fellowship training in Ophthalmology and Corneal Disease at the University of Minnesota and affiliated hospitals. He extended his Fellowship training in Anterior Segment eye surgery at Mary Shield Hospital in Dallas and as a Heed Fellow in Glaucoma and Anterior Segment eye surgery at University Hospitals in Salt Lake City. In 1980, Dr. Lindstrom returned to the University of Minnesota, where he spent ten years on the faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology, the last two as the Harold G. Scheie Research Chair. He entered private practice in 1990, and has led the growth and expansion of Minnesota Eye Consultants as Managing Partner. Dr. Lindstrom conceptualized the Phillips Eye Institute Center for Teaching and Research in Minneapolis, a state-of-the-art ophthalmic research and surgical skills education facility, and serves as its Medical Director. He continues to play an active role in teaching and training at the Phillips Eye Institute and the University of Minnesota. Dr. Lindstrom also serves as Medical Director and board member of Laser Vision Centers, Inc., and Midwest Surgical Services, as well as Associate Director of the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank.
Dr. Lindstrom holds 28 patents in ophthalmology, including intraocular lens implant technology, corneal preservation, irrigation solutions, viscoelastic solutions, intracorneal lenses and associated surgical instruments. He has designed a number of intraocular lenses and instruments that are used in clinical practices globally. A frequent lecturer throughout the world on Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery including LASIK, Custom LASIK, specialized LASIK Eye Surgery and Lens Replacement Surgery, he has presented 28 named lectures and keynote speeches before professional societies in the U.S. and abroad. A seasoned writer, Dr. Lindstrom serves on a number of editorial boards, including Associate Editor of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and Chief Medical Editor for Ocular Surgery News. He has co-edited three books, published over 300 journal articles and 50 chapters in books. His professional affiliations are extensive, including charter member of the executive committee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Refractive Surgery Interest Group, President-Elect of the International Implant Club, member emeritus of the International Ocular Microsurgery Study Club and member of the American Ophthalmology Society. He is the recipient of numerous awards for distinguished service by national and international ophthalmology associations, including the first lifetime achievement award from the International Society of Refractive Surgery.
Thomas W. Samuelson, M.D.
Thomas W. Samuelson, M.D., a Founding Partner of Minnesota Eye Consultants where he performs LASIK and is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist who is recognized internationally for the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma, as well as Laser Eye Surgery to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. A Minnesota native, Dr. Samuelson graduated from Concordia College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He was a four-year letter winner in varsity hockey, team captain and voted "most valuable player" by his teammates in 1981 when Concordia advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Division II tournament. Dr. Samuelson completed his Medical Degree at the University of Minnesota and his Residency training at the University of South Florida as Chief Resident. He finished sub-specialty training at the Wills Eye Hospital at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. A Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota and past-Chair of the medical staff at the Phillips Eye Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Dr. Samuelson has played an active role in Ophthalmology and Glaucoma education. He directs the Glaucoma Service and is an Instructor of Ophthalmic Pharmacology at Regions Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota as well as a Consultant for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Minneapolis, both of which are major teaching hospitals for the University of Minnesota residency program. He is recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Achievement Award, honoring physicians who significantly contribute to the Academy's educational endeavors. He is President of the International Society of Spaeth Fellows - Wills Eye Hospital's glaucoma fellows program, past-President of the Minneapolis and St. Paul Ophthalmology Societies and past-Chair of the Phillips Eye Institute education committee. He also founded the Phillips Eye Institute-Four Winds School Leader Reader Program, a philanthropic initiative that supports reading achievement among high-risk students in the inner city.
Dr. Samuelson's professional affiliations are extensive, including membership on the Executive Committee of the American Glaucoma Society. He also is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Eye Study Club, the International Intraocular Lens Implant Club and several other prestigious societies. He serves on the Editorial Board of Ocular Surgery News and the Review of Refractive Surgery, as well as a scientific reviewer for several ophthalmology journals.
Dr. Samuelson has contributed research toward the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma, especially the exfoliation syndrome and management of coincident cataract and glaucoma. He also has performed research on the safety of LASIK in patients with other ocular disorders, especially glaucoma. A frequent lecturer nationally and internationally on ocular surgery, he has also published numerous scientific manuscripts and textbook chapters on ophthalmic surgery.
David R. Hardten, M.D.
David R. Hardten, M.D. is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, LASIK surgeon and Founding Partner of Minnesota Eye Consultants. Dr. Hardten, is one of the nation's most prominent leaders in research and education and treatment of the Cornea, External Disease, Anterior Segment, Cataract, Refractive Surgery including LASIK and Custom LASIK, and Laser Eye Surgery. As Director for Minnesota Eye Consultants? Clinical Research Department, Dr. Hardten leads extensive research projects surrounding the latest LASIK Eye Surgery refractive procedures for correction of myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. He also serves as director of Minnesota Eye Consultants? Fellowship and Optometric Residency program, both of which are prestigious, year-long fellowships that train physicians in the sub-specialties of cornea and external disease, glaucoma, cataract and refractive surgery including LASIK, specialized LASIK Eye Surgery, Custom LASIK and Lens Replacement Surgery.
A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Dr. Hardten graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School. He attended the University of Kansas, and was later accepted in the University of Minnesota Department of Ophthalmology residency program. While completing residency training, Dr. Hardten received numerous honors and awards for outstanding achievement. He completed his Fellowship training in Cornea and External Disease at the University of Minnesota and received the ARVO/National Eye Institute Fellow Award. Dr. Hardten entered private practice in 1993 with Drs. Richard L. Lindstrom and Thomas W. Samuelson as founding partners of Minnesota Eye Consultants. His practice extends beyond Minnesota Eye Consultants to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota as well as throughout greater Minnesota, providing medical and surgical services to patients in the Twin Cities and outside communities. Dr. Hardten has focused on education throughout his career. As Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota Department of Ophthalmology, he is actively involved in teaching residents at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, as well as fellows at the Veterans Medical Center, Minneapolis. He also serves as a Clinical Associate Professor for the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Additionally, he is an Instructor for VISX and Laser Vision Centers, where he teaches ophthalmologists from around the world to perform LASIK, Custom LASIK and other specialized LASIK Eye Surgery procedures.
Dr. Hardten consults to many major ophthalmologic companies, holds three patents and serves on the editorial board for several ophthalmic journals. He is a regular contributor and reviewer for numerous ophthalmic papers and journals. Dr. Hardten has held leadership positions in many professional organizations, including board director for the International Society of Refractive Surgery; co-medical director for Laser Vision Centers, Inc.; board of directors for the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists; programming and refractive surgery interest group planning committee of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. While serving for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he received its distinguished achievement award in 1999 for his countless efforts to advance the agenda of the Academy. Dr. Hardten lectures throughout the world on refractive surgery and research in the areas of LASIK and advanced LASIK Eye Surgery procedures. He has published over 20 chapters and 100 articles on Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery topics encompassing LASIK, LASIK Eye Surgery techniques, Laser Eye Surgery procedures and other topics useful for LASIK surgeons.
Elizabeth A. Davis, M.D.,F.A.C.S.
Elizabeth A. Davis, MD, FACS is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist and LASIK surgeon with subspecialty training in Corneal, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery including LASIK and other types of LASIK Eye Surgery and Laser Eye Surgery. She was born in Boston and grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, where she was the valedictorian of her high school class. She attended Cornell University as an undergraduate, graduating Summa Cum Laude in mathematics with distinction in all subjects (top 5% of her class). She was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Mortar Board National Honor Societies. She was selected as a Presidential Scholar and received several research awards.
Dr. Davis completed her Doctor of Medicine degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, graduating first in her class. She received a Dean's Award and Lange Medical Student Award each year of medical school. She also received the Franklin Paine Mall Prize in anatomy, Hewlett-Packard Top Medical Graduate Award, and the Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Award. She was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and won research awards as well as the prestigious William Stewart Halsted Award in surgery. She completed four years of cardiac surgery residency at Johns Hopkins before changing specialties to ophthalmology. At Johns Hopkins, she also completed a two-year immunology research fellowship, being supported by an American Heart Association Fellowship Award and Stetler Research Award.
For her Ophthalmology Residency, Dr. Davis attended Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School. She then received a HEED Ophthalmic Foundation Scholarship to complete subspecialty Fellowship training in Cornea, External Disease, Refractive Surgery, and Glaucoma at Minnesota Eye Consultants. She ranked in the 99th percentile on her Ophthalmology Board examinations.
Dr. Davis is a partner of Minnesota Eye Consultants, P.A. She is also an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota. She is a member of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Refractive Surgery Interest Group and the International Society of Refractive Surgery. She is on the American Academy of Ophthalmology Committee for Ophthalmic Technology Development. Dr. Davis is actively involved in research. She is a Clinical Investigator in numerous FDA clinical studies for LASIK and Custom LASIK and was one of only a handful of investigators from across the nation selected to travel to Tijuana for training on Implantable Contact Lenses. She also is an Instructor for LASIK and specialized LASIK Eye Surgery techniques such as Custom LASIK, as well as for Intacs Corneal Inserts, and Cataract Surgery, Lens Replacement Surgery and Lens Implantation training courses. Dr. Davis has given numerous talks across the country and internationally and has been an invited speaker at many meetings. She has authored 26 abstracts, 42 journal articles, and 22 book chapters covering areas of interest to LASIK surgeons and Cataract surgeons including the topics of Laser Eye Surgery and LASIK Eye Surgery.
Dr. Davis has performed thousands of Laser Eye Surgery procedures including several thousand LASIK procedures. Dr. Davis performs all types of Laser Eye Surgery, specialized LASIK Eye Surgery, and Lens Replacement Surgery including PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), PTK (Phototherapeutic Keratectomy), Intacs (Intracorneal Ring segments), Artisan and STAAR Phakic Intraocular Lenses (Implantable Contact Lenses), Refractec CK procedures (Conductive Keratoplasty), and LTK (Laser Thermokeratoplasty). Additionally she routinely performs Cataract Surgery and Cornea Transplant Eye Surgery. Dr. Davis is a certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Board Certified LASIK surgeon by the American Board of Eye Surgeons. She is on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Eye Surgery. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Each year since 2001, Dr. Davis has been one of the top five LASIK surgeons (out of 1,000) within the Laser Vision Centers, Inc. system in the United States. Dr. Davis is the first eye surgeon in the area certified to perform and use accommodative intraocular lenses for Lens Replacement Surgery.
William J. Lipham, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. William J. Lipham, is a Board Certified Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology, specializes in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Laser Eye Surgery including LASIK, Custom LASIK and specialized LASIK Eye Surgery for the correction of nearsightedness and astigmatism at Minnesota Eye Consultants. His expertise encompasses surgery of the eyelids, tear drainage system, orbit and laser vision correction. In addition to managing complex medical and surgical cases, he also provides a broad array of facial rejuvenation services, including cosmetic eyelid surgery, laser skin resurfacing, small-incision endoscopic forehead lifts, as well as collagen and Botox injections for wrinkle reduction.
Dr. Lipham grew up in Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where his undergraduate studies in biology and zoology led him to pursue a career in medicine. He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. After his first year of medical school training, Dr. Lipham was selected to participate in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute-National Institutes of Health (HHMI-NIH) Research Scholars Program at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. During his two-year NIH fellowship, he published three papers and received honors for his investigational work, including a merit scholarship from the HHMI for demonstrating "outstanding potential as a future leader in academic medicine."
After graduation from medical school, Dr. Lipham completed a transitional internship at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu. During his internship, he traveled to Vietnam with the Aloha Medical Mission where he worked with a group of American eye surgeons who taught local doctors how to surgically reconstruct eyelids and faces of patients who had sustained severe trauma. This experience sparked an interest in pursuing additional training as an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon.
Dr. Lipham then completed a three-year ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami, Florida. He then pursued an additional two-year American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at Duke University Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Lipham currently serves as President of the Minneapolis Ophthalmology Society and is an active member of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS), American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and American Medical Association. He is a frequent lecturer at scientific meetings and has published numerous articles and chapters in the field of Ophthalmology.
Patrick J. Riedel, M.D.
Patrick J. Riedel, M.D., is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist who specializes in Glaucoma treatment and Cataract and Refractive Surgery including LASIK, Custom LASIK and other types of LASIK Eye Surgery at Minnesota Eye Consultants. Dr. Riedel graduated Magna Cum Laude from Carleton College in 1987, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. While there he acted as a teaching assistant. Dr. Riedel continued his post-graduate studies in Medicine at the University of Minnesota, where he received several scholarships for merit. Honors included the Clarence Peterson Scholarship for Merit, the Elva Lovell Scholarship of Merit, the Gerald P. Plainance Scholarship for Merit, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Society. He received his Doctorate Degree in Medicine in 1992, and completed a year-long internship at Hennepin County Medical Center the following year. Dr. Riedel then pursued a three-year Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. He continued his subspecialty training, completing a Fellowship in Glaucoma and Cataract Surgery at the University of Utah John Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City.
Before joining Minnesota Eye Consultants, Dr. Riedel practiced at Bend Memorial Clinic in Bend, Oregon for five years. His professional associations include the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology, Oregon Medical Association and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Riedel has pursued clinical research studies in glaucoma and ocular hypertension, and has contributed to published works in the Archives of Ophthalmology.
