Marc Michelson, M.D. is a LASIK Surgeon in Birmingham and the Founder of Alabama Eye and Cataract Center in Birmingham as well Michelson Laser Vision where performs Laser Eye Surgery including LASIK in Birmingham, Custom LASIK and other types of specialized LASIK Eye Surgery in Birmingham. In addition, Dr. Michelson is Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Medicine. Dr. Michelson completed his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He then earned his Medical Degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. He continued his medical education with an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and then completed a Residency in Ophthalmology at the Eye Foundation Hospital of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Michelson advanced his eye surgery training by completing a Fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a Fellow of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Royal Society of Medicine, the Castroviejo Society and the International Society of Refractive Surgery. He was the Founder and served as Medical Director of the Carraway Refractive Laser Center at Carraway Methodist Medical Center, Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Michelson was a pioneering eye surgeon in Laser Eye Surgery for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. In 1988 Dr. Michelson was appointed the fifth Clinical Investigator in the United States for Summit Technology and assisted in the clinical trials required to present data to the Food and Drug Administration for approval of the Excimer Laser. Dr. Michelson actually performed his first treatments with the Excimer Laser on the human eye in 1989. More importantly, he has been the Principle Clinical Investigator for many Laser Eye Surgery clinical studies of Excimer Laser surgery treatment for myopia, hyperopia, and glaucoma. Dr. Michelson has the distinction of being the first Laser Eye Surgeon in the State of Alabama to perform Excimer Laser Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Automated Lamellar Keratectomy (ALK), and LASIK. He has been awarded the distinction of 'Best Doctors in America". In addition to his clinical research work on LASIK Surgery in Birmingham, Dr. Michelson performs Cataract Surgery in Birmingham and is a distinguished Cataract Surgeon in Alabama. He was one of the first eye surgeons in Alabama to implant the multifocal presbyopia correcting intraocular lens (IOL), ReSTOR in Alabama, a multifocal lens implant to eliminate bifocals. Dr. Michelson also has considerable experience in helping Alabama Cataract Surgery patients eliminate their dependence on bifocals with the Crystalens Lens Implant. He has taught and performed LASIK Surgery and Cataract Surgery around the world. He is a member of the International Association for Training and Research in Ophthalmology Surgery and has published numerous scientific papers on Cataract Surgery and Laser Eye Surgery. Dr. Michelson is a frequent speaker around the world on LASIK and Cataract Surgery and has presented numerous lectures at major Ophthalmic Symposia and meetings. Dr. Michelson produced, for the first time in ophthalmic medical history, a high-definition, 3-D video of eye surgery that was viewed by eye surgeons around the world.

Dr. Catherine Murphy received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 2001 and joined the staffs of both Michelson Laser Vision in Birmingham and Alabama Eye and Cataract Center in Birmingham on a full-time basis in 2005.

Dr. Murphy is a member of the American Optometric Association, Alabama Optometric Association, and Birmingham Area Optometric Society. Dr. Murphy diagnoses and treats medical eye disease and performs post-operative care of anterior segment surgical cases involving cataract, corneal transplantation, anterior segment reconstruction, and Laser Eye Surgery including LASIK, Epi LASIK, PRK and Custom LASIK.

Not only is Dr. Murphy a colleague of Dr. Michelson's, but she is also his LASIK patient. Dr. Michelson performed LASIK Surgery for Dr. Murphy in November 2004 on a live television newscast. NBC-13 news broadcast the procedure as Dr. Murphy ended 25 years of glasses and contact lens wear. Dr. Murphy's own pre- and post-operative experiences have been helpful in patients' decision making processes.
